11-meter sculpture of red sandstone was made by famous sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdy, author of the Statue of Liberty in New York. It was established in 1879 in honor of the heroic defense known as the Siege of Belfort (1870-1871). The sculpture is located on the wall of a huge fortress.
The entrance to the balcony with a statue is paid (2 euros) and is open at a certain hours: 10-12:30, 14-18. The roof of the building, where is the flag, has free access, be sure to go there and see the town from above.
Near the fortress is the old town of Belfort. Small and cute.
Another beautiful place is the embankment of the Savores River. As elsewhere in Alsace, here are many flowers on the streets.
Tourist map of the city can be downloaded here (use link Touristic Map).
Getting there: There is a railway station in Belfort, almost in the center of the city.
