The central part of the city is small and can be visited in half a day. By the way, recently some episodes from the 6th season of the Game of Thrones were shot in Girona (video).
The city has a beautiful old center, the main objects can be seen on the next map.
At first we strolled along the Riu Onyar river. Colorful houses on its banks create a unique landscape and are a symbol of the city. Several bridges are laid across the river, the most interesting is the red, iron bridge Pont de les Peixateries Velles that was built in 1876 by the company of Gustave Eiffel.
Next we walked on the fortress wall. Initially, the walls were built in the 15th century and in 1985 they were restored. The map shows the entrances, we used number 37. In the evening perfect views are guaranteed.
Catedral de Girona with the widest Gothic nave in the world occupies a central place in the city skyline. Game of Thrones was filmed on the steps that lead to the entrance. Around the cathedral is a Jewish Gothic quarter, built in the 15th century.
And if you want to sit somewhere high and look at the city from above, then an excellent place is near the Torre d'alfons XII tower (N 41 58.893 E 2 49.801). It can be reached on foot or by bus L-7 (schedule).
We spent the night in Girona. If you are travelling by car, then we recomment AC Hotel Palau de Bellavista (booking.com). It is quite inexpensive for a 5-star hotel.
Getting there: Underground parking in the city center N 41 59.218 E 2 49.322. Outdoor parking N 41. 59.285 E 2 49.363. There is an airport, popular with lowcosts. There are many buses from the Barcelona main bus station Estació d'Autobusos Barcelona Nord (schedule). Trains run every hour from Estació de Sants central train station.
