Attention! Unfortunately, on March 13, 2017, the main natural attraction of the island of Gozo - the Azure Window - collapsed. At the moment it is completely destroyed.

Gozo is the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago and the major tourist destination after Valletta. Despite the fact that main island has almost the same attractions, the romance of travel by ferry to another island attracts thousands of tourists every day. Most of them come with organized groups and continue on buses after the ferry. If you are traveling alone on public transport be sure to stand closer to the exit from the ferry to get to the bus, as there will be a lot of other people looking for the same bus. You can take your car on the ferry. The ticket is bought only on the way back from Gozo, travel time approximately 25 minutes.

We had the following plan to visit Gozo. By bus 301 from the ferry (Vapur) we went to the island's capital Victoria. Daily bus ticket on Gozo costs 1.5 euro (2015). Across the street from the bus station we rented bikes in Victoria Garage (www.victoriagaragegozo.com).

On the bikes we went to Dwejra, the most popular place in Gozo. It's quite simple to get there as you have to go along one road all the way. Of course take some map with you. There is a pavement, built by the European Union, so the ride is quite comfortable. Consider that such route is not possible in summer as the sun is too hot. Dwejra can also be reached by bus 311 from Victoria.

Along the way we watched beautiful landscapes.

Also we stopped to see Ta'Pinu Church (map), it is very picturesque, so do not miss.

After San Lowrenz there will be a descent to the sea, with a length of approximately 500 meters. We went down by bikes. But you can leave the bikes at the top and use the bus 311 to reach them.

Downstairs is the main tourist attraction - Azure Window.

In addition there is another very interesting place - an inland sea. This is a lake or a bay, which is fenced off from the sea by high cliffs, but, nevertheless, there is a tunnel in the rock that connects the reservoir to the sea.

From the bay you can take a boat trip (20 minutes, 4 euros), see the Azure Window from the sea and visit some caves.

Also pay attention to other attractions on the Gozo island:

  - The citadel in Victoria with the Cathedral of Santa Maria.
  - Ggantija (wiki) - megalithic temple built in 3600 BC. In contrast to the similar temples on the main island, it is not covered with a roof and therefore more interesting.
